Abstract

Web technology enables NASA data to be accessible in real time. Instructors can access the latest data and convert them into education materials. Data of current relevance can be identified by the instructor and used in a comprehensive fashion to demonstrate and reinforce both analytical and critical thinking. To reinforce analytical thinking, the data can be analyzed and displayed graphically using spread-sheet software, and various data sets taken under different conditions can be studied to reinforce critical thinking. These pedagogical methods also serve to enhance the NASA and NOAO education outreach programs. Experience has shown that this method is popular with students because it engages them visually and presents them with problems to think about and the tools to resolve them with. The discovery of extra-solar planets in nearby stars using this approach has proven to be one of the most popular subjects. Implementation details will be presented and the students' responses will be discussed.
