Abstract

This descriptive study used existing data to examine patients' perceptions of preoperative patient education regarding heart surgery. The objective of the study was to determine differences in scores for the importance of information and scores for how realistic the information was with patients' actual experiences. The sample included 22 patients who viewed a preoperative video. The ecological systems perspective provided the conceptual framework. The analysis of the data consisted of paired t tests which examined how scores for the importance of information differed from scores for how realistic the information was. The paired t tests revealed a lack of fit for two survey items and a best fit for 10. Patients ranked "you will likely go home on the 5th day after surgery" as #1 in importance. This proved to be ranked significantly lower for realism. "Remembering to call cardiac rehab" was ranked #1 for realism.
