Abstract
This qualitative case study explored perceptions of the learning environment and the experiences of learning and teaching when integrated media was used to anchor instruction in a Rehabilitation Counselor Education graduate course. Integrated media was defined as the linking of computer, communication, and audiovisual technologies for the purpose of anchoring instruction. Anchored instruction was defined as instruction centered around a focus event or problem situation to provide a conceptual framework for learner comprehension. For the purposes of this study, feature films were chosen as instructional anchors using selection criteria described by Safran (1998) and The Cognition and Technology Group at Vanderbilt (1990). Using vivid video formats to foster teaching and learning, the anchored instruction approach provides a method of linking theory to practice, which may be particularly useful in applied fields such as rehabilitation counseling. An Internet authoring environment was used to facilitate the integration of computer-based media into the course. The study was conducted in a graduate course with eight students and one faculty member participating. Content analysis was used for data collection and interpretation. Findings suggested that the student learning experience included media-related stress, acquisition of secondary skills, learner role changes, learning through multiple modalities, and emotional reactions to portrayals of disability. Findings further suggested that the teaching experience required a refocusing of instructor energy, a role change in teaching, and deliberate community building among class participants. Finally, research results suggested that study participants perceived the learning environment as convenient, innovative, and anonymous.
