Abstract

Hand washing is the easiest way to maintain health; unfortunately many children are not taught how to wash their hands effectively. Studies demonstrate that there is a direct link between proper hand washing and illness. Absenteeism due to illness has a direct impact on the academic success of children. To combat this problem schools can develop health education programs that teach children the importance of hand washing and how to do it correctly. The school nurse can be instrumental in the development of such a program. The school nurse and the teachers can work together to develop a program that will instruct students on proper hand washing which is a practice that will impact their health for a life time.
