Abstract

Abstract: This paper offers preliminary results of an assessment of a student laptop program for new students at the College of New Rochelle during the fall 2004 semester. The project built upon the already successful introduction of the ANGEL learning management system and the use of both ANGEL and the laptops was required in the introductory writing classes. The data suggests that, in contrast to the less costly approach of a desktop-based environment, the integration of ubiquitous technology in a wireless environment transforms in the activities and dynamics of the face-to-face classroom and significantly enhances the opportunities for communication and collaboration in the learning environment as a whole. The project has also provided the College with unanticipated benefits in the utilization of its learning spaces and new challenges in user expectations that will be of interest to other institutions considering ubiquitous computing projects.
